THE EURASIA FOUNDATION AWARDS NEARLY $70,000 for CIVIL SOCIETY
DEVELOPMENT in AZERBAIJAN and OPENS NGO SUPPORT CENTER in SHEKI
Baku, Azerbaijan (February 14, 2002)-The Eurasia Foundation representative
office in Baku has awarded $69,156 in 2 new grants to promote civil society
development in Azerbaijan. The grant recipients are the Association of War Veteran
Journalist and the Union of Journalists of Azerbaijan. In addition, an NGO Support
Center was opened in Sheki.
Association of War Veteran Journalists ($34,211)
"Mass Media and Courts"
To support and normalize relations between the press and the courts by improving
journalists' knowledge about legal processes and court proceedings. The Association
will be conducting 12 seminars for journalists and publish a handbook for journalists
on relevant terms. They will also create a consulting service and prepare recommendations
to parliament for laws that apply to journalists.
Union of Journalists of Azerbaijan ($34,945)
"Role of Mass Media in the Development of Regions"
To support the professional development of journalists in areas outside of Azerbaijan's
major cities. This project builds on an earlier grant to the Union that provided
training to regional mass media. It will continue to introduce Western standards
of journalism through training courses in 3 regions (14 districts) for 90 media
representatives. In addition, the Union will host two discussion forums to help
the Azerbaijani press resolve their problems.
Eurasia Foundation Grant Opens NGO Support Center in Sheki
On January 24, 2002 the Azerbaijan Union of Youth opened the Sheki NGO Support
Center to provide legal and educational assistance to existing NGOs, assist
the formation of new NGOs in the regional center of Sheki and its neighboring
cities of Gakh, Zagatala, and Balaken, and inform and involve citizens of NGO
activities throughout the northwest region. Funded by a grant from The Eurasia
Foundation, the NGO Support Center will contribute to the development of a budding
civil society in northwest Azerbaijan. The Center is located at: 18A Chagali
