DELEGATION IN AZERBAIJAN
VISIT OF THE HEAD OF THE EUROPE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL
FEDERATION OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES TO AZERBAIJAN
The Head of the International Federation's Europe Department in Geneva, Ms.
Lynette Lowndes will visit Azerbaijan on 26 - 28 September 2001.
One of the main purposes of Ms. Lowndes visit to Azerbaijan is to meet with
the President and staff of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society (AzRC) and get
the first-hand information on the AzRC organizational change process. Head of
Europe Department will be informed about the progress of the capacity building
process within the programmes implemented by the AzRC through the Federation's
assistance in areas of Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response, Health and
Care and Promotion of Humanitarian Values.
During her visit, Ms. Lowndes will meet with the staff of the Federation's
Delegation in Azerbaijan working in Baku, Sabirabad and Fizuli. Head of the
Federation's Europe Department will visit the Southern Camps (Sabirabad, Saatli
and Bilasuvar), which are home to some 32, 000 IDPs, and Fizuli, where the Federation
is finishing up the Pilot Rehabilitation and Repatriation Project in the liberated
area of Shukurbeyli village of Fizuli and targeting 160 IDP families.
Head of the Europe Department will also have meetings with government and local
authority officials and hold discussions with members of the Cabinet of Ministers
of the Azerbaijan Republic on the operations of the Federation Delegation and
further assistance of the Federation to Azerbaijan through the AzRC.
Ms. Lowndes' visit to Azerbaijan is indicative of the importance the Federation's
Secretariat in Geneva attaches to the development programmes run by the Federation
in Azerbaijan through the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society.
