Earthquake in Azerbaijan
Whenever disaster strikes we have to identify
the most affected and bring assistance immediately' says Zlatco
Kovach, the International Federation's Camp Supervisor. The
Federation team, led by Zlatco, was quickly sent to assess the
needs when an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook
the districts of Lenkoran, Lerik, Astara, Yardimli, Masalli and
Jalilabad on the 9th of July. The earthquake left some 800 houses
'It was about 7:30 PM when I felt an earth
tremor that caused a great hole in the front wall. The other
walls are cracked so that is very hazardous to live in' says Mrs.
Aliyeva Vagya, 72. Vagya's family of ten is living outside the
house in Balaband village of Lerik district like other 37
families, who lost their homes.
After a two-day assessment the district of
Lerik was identified to be affected more and prompt actions
undertaken. Supported by the International Federation the
Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society commenced the relief operation
distributing blankets and plastic sheets to people. In all, 1165
blankets and 63 rolls of plastic sheet were released to be
distributed to affected families. It should be noted that 45
rolls of plastic sheet were generously donated by MSF Holland.
So far the Azeri Red Crescent has distributed
some 160 sets, which include one plastic sheet and two blankets
per person and it is ready to bring more succor if needed.
