THE EURASIA FOUNDATION AWARDS MORE THAN $68,000
in NEW GRANTS for AZERBAIJAN
Baku, Azerbaijan (April 5, 2002) - The Eurasia Foundation representative office
in Baku has awarded $68,361 in grants to promote civil society development in
Azerbaijan. The grant recipients are the RUH Journalists Defense Committee and
the Young Specialists' Rights Defense Society.
RUH Journalists Defense Committee ($33,390)
"Institute (Journalism and Law) - New Stage of Democratization of Society"
This grant supports reform in journalism education. The RUH Journalists Defense
Committee will create an effective university-level curriculum for legal rights
education to help reduce violations against the press. This project includes
conducting a range of discussions on educational programs and tools specific
to legal management for mass media, officially incorporating manuals into courses
for mass media employees and students, and establishing interactive teaching
methods for the curriculum.
Young Specialists' Rights Defense Society ($34,971)
"Civil Initiative in Protection of Human Rights"
The Eurasia Foundation has awarded this grant to strengthen civil initiatives
that promote human rights as part of its support for increased protection of
constitutional rights and civil liberties in Azerbaijan. This project will organize
seminars to raise public awareness in the regions, train human rights activists,
publish and distribute a book telling citizens about their rights and what to
do if these are infringed, and establish a bureau to advise on human rights
