ISHRAT HUSAIN APPOINTED GOVERNOR OF THE CENTRAL BANK OF PAKISTAN

WASHINGTON, November 24, 1999Ishrat Husain, World Bank Director for the Central Asian Republics, was officially appointed today as Governor of the Central Bank of Pakistan.

Commenting on the appointment Wednesday, World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn said, "I am really thrilled for Ishrat and for his country. He is a first class choice for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Pakistan. He is a man of intellect and of well-established managerial experience. His brilliant career at the Bank includes pure economic work as Chief Economist of the African and East Asia and Pacific Regions as well as field work as the Bank's Resident Representative in Nigeria. Ishrat knows well all aspects of the international development business. We at the Bank give him our warmest possible support in his new endeavor.

Husain has had a distinguished career at the World Bank. Prior to assuming the directorship for the Central Asian Republics, he was responsible for the Bank's policies and strategy development in the areas of poverty reduction, gender, NGOs and public sector reform and governance.

Husain served as Chief Economist for the Banks Africa Region between 1991-94 and later became Chief Economist for the Banks East Asia and Pacific Region, focusing mainly on China. He was Chief of the Debt and International Finance Division where he helped develop the Bank's strategic approach to Latin American debt problems which subsequently resulted in the Bank's participation in the Brady Initiative of debt reduction. As the Bank's Resident Representative in Nigeria, he led the Bank's team that assisted Nigeria in formulating its structural adjustment program of 1986.
