EUROPEAN COMMISSION & WORLD BANK CO-SPONSOR FINANCIAL SECTOR REGULATION AND SUPERVISION SEMINAR

PRAGUE, June 24, 1999A two-day workshop on financial sector regulation and supervision in the context of European Union accession opened today in Prague, Czech Republic. The seminar, Integrated Financial Sector Regulation and Supervision in the Context of EU Accession, co-organized and co- sponsored by the European Commission and the World Bank, is the third meeting in the European Borrowers Network (EBN) seminar series.

The main goals of this seminar are:

  • To analyze how financial sector supervision and regulation can reduce the sectors vulnerability to shocks;
  • To share country experiences and review existing regulatory and supervisory mechanisms in EU accession countries and how they can be improved; and
  • To discuss the next steps needed to bring financial sector supervision and regulation in line with the EU acquis in the run-up to accession.

The two-day event, which is being held at the Hotel Praha, will include participants from the ten EU accession countries including government officials, senior and middle-level decision makers, Deputy Ministers, Governors, senior government advisers, Board members, Deputy CEOs, and department directors from Ministries of Finance, Central Banks, Bank Supervision, and other government agencies from the ten EU Accession countries. In addition, participants from international organizations (including, among others, the Bank for International Settlements-BIS, European Commission, IMF, and the World Bank), investment banks, institutional investors with presence in Central Europe with attend the seminar.
