Institute for Reporter Freedom and Safety (IRFS) (Active)
Mission The Institute for Reporter Freedom and Safety was created in 2006 on May 3 (World Press Freedom Day). It is an independent, non-partisan NGO. The Institute?s founders are professional Azerbaijani journalists who sustained serious injuries as a result of violence against them while they were carrying out their work. The organization?s director is Emin Huseynov, who sustained serious spinal injuries while covering riots that broke out in the wake of the 2003 presidential elections in Azerbaijan. Huseynov is assisted by other well-known experts in the media sector and lawyers. According to the Institute?s mission statement, its goals are to: ? to provide urgently needed legal assistance to injured journalists ? to prepare reports on freedom of the press in Azerbaijan ? to, in the event of violence against journalists, organize investigations into these matters by independent journalists ? to organize training and seminars for journalists ? to prepare projects about journalist safety and the protection of their work rights. ? to organize roundtables dedicated to the problems of journalists. ? to build relationships with international journalist organizations, etc. Since its inception, the Institute for Reporter Freedom and Safety has been monitoring all violence against journalists and violations of journalists? rights in Azerbaijan. It has prepared statements, conducted press conferences, and increased awareness about the violation of journalists? rights and attacks on journalists. Its reports were referred to by former PACE rapportuer Andreas Gross in a Council of Europe Session. IRFS representatives have also been contacted by Voice of America, Amnesty International, the Committee to Protect Journalists, etc. for information and cooperation. The email distribution list for IRFS? press releases and ?Dispatch? Newsletter includes thousands of representatives of the local and foreign media, local and foreign officials, and local and foreign organizations. When the organization?s website goes into operation (by July 2007), it anticipates even greater notoriety, interest and support. At present we are spearheading a campaign for the release of Sakit Zahidov, a well-known satiric/journalist critical of authorities, who was imprisoned in June on questionable drug charges.. Through our advocacy campaign we have successfully attracted the attention of world renowned media and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights House, CPJ, World Press Institute, the Voice of America and many others. We also have a newsletter called Dispatch on the press situation in Azerbaijan in English, which is released once or twice a week. IRFS also successfully conducted a campaign in January and February of 2007 to gather financial assistance for three Azerbaijani journalists who were victims of brutal violent attacks and persecution. Through this action approximately $5,000 USD was donated directly to these journalists and their families. IRFS is officially registered as an NGO with Azerbaijan?s Ministry of Justice.
