 Meeting - Round table on housing problems of IDPs (AYLU)

Beginning from January 2006, Azerbaijan Young Lawyers Union together with Association of Georgian IDP Women and with financial assistance of Danish Refugee Council implements the project on Legal Support to Refugees and IDPs related to Their Living Conditions.

On June 25, 2006, in Baku at the conference hall of Irshad hotel the round table on Durable Solution of Refugees and IDPs problems related to the housing conditions has been conducted within the project.

About 30 representatives of governmental, non-governmental bodies and international organizations participated on the Round Table. Also 7 experts from appropriate governmental and non-governmental bodies of Georgian Republic working with IDP issues participated there.

The main purpose of Azerbaijan Young Lawyers Union in conduction of the round table was to provide information to the participants about measures taken in Azerbaijan in the field of solving IDPs housing problems and to bring the reforms carried out to the attention of public.

Ramil Isgandarov Chairman of Azerbaijan Young Lawyers Union opened the event and gave information about the implemented project.

Mr. Telman Mammadov Head of the Apparatus of the State Committee on the Issues of Refugees and IDPs had a speech and gave information about the measures taken by the government in the field of improvement of IDPs housing conditions and the work done within the State Program on Improvement of Living Conditions and Enhancement of Employment for Refugees and IDPs.

Beso Tserediani - the head of the Office of Abkhazian Government in Exile on the Work with IDPs had a speech on the behalf of Georgian delegation and provided information about the actions taken and problems existing in this field.

Also the opinion of NGO representatives about the housing problems of IDPs have been heard at the event. Thus, lawyer Agamirza Bagirov and chairperson of the Association of Georgian IDP Women Liana Beriya had speech.

At the end of the event participants came to the conclusion that as a durable solution the process of return (repatriation) should be considered a priority both in Azerbaijan and Georgia.

On July 26, Georgian guests visited Bilasuvar region and acquainted with newly built settlement for IDPs. This visit had been organized by Avaz Hasanov director of the Society for Humanitarian Research. During the visit guests met with representatives of the state bodies and IDPs settled in Bilasuvar region.
